Adware and Spyware

Adware
Businesses pay to learn your purchasing habits, household income and other demographic facts to better target advertising to you. Often, when you click on offers for free online games or similar products, you will unknowingly install the adware software on your computer.
Web Bugs
A form of adware that can track what you are doing online, return that information to a third party, and allow that party to pop up ads on your computer or monitor your online activity for demographic purposes. While annoying, web bugs usually do not collect any personal identification information.
Proxy adware
Allows all information sent by the user to any other person to be captured by the marketers' servers. This also applies to SSL-encrypted transactions containing sensitive information, such as online banking user IDs and PINs.
Commercial spyware
Software used by employers, private investigators, identity thieves and others to record everything you do on your computer - without your knowledge. While it does have some legitimate uses for parents and employers, it can be abused by identity thieves.
